Layton made it official in the traditional way on national signing day Wednesday, flanked by his parents and in front of a cadre of former Grizzly teammates in the Mountain Avenue Gym trophy room. The Midwestern League all-star who helped the Grizzlies advance to the Class 5A state semifinals as a junior and quarterfinals as a senior says he will play linebacker for the Wolves, who compete at the NCAA Division II level in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference against the likes of Central Washington and Seattle Pacific. Layton also considered Eastern Washington and Humboldt State, but chose Western Oregon of Monmouth after making good connections during his official visit. "I just felt better when I was at Western, I felt good when I was there," said Layton, who's 6-foot-2, 215 pounds. "The players were nice, everybody was cool there. I felt like I had good relationships with everybody there." Layton led the Grizzlies with 85 tackles as a senior. He also had nine tackles for a loss, one sack and three pass breakups. Offensively, Layton had a team-high 34 catches for 310 yards and five touchdown receptions, also a team high. Western Oregon was 6-5 in 2014, including 4-2 in the GNAC. The Wolves may be in need of a defensive playmaker after surrendering 25.1 points and 392.4 points per game last season. Layton, who's always been a two-way player at Ashland, says he's fine with focusing on the defensive side of things at Western. "I like carrying the rock, but the last couple years I've really started to like the position of linebacker so I think it's definitely a good fit for me," he said. "I want to get a little bigger and faster — all the guys in college are going to be bigger and faster." Layton is the third Grizzly under 10th-year head coach Charlie Hall to sign a letter of intent, joining Sam Cowan in 2011 (South Dakota School of Mining and Technology) and Matt Lipski in 2008 (University of Montana).
