The Grizzlies struggled at the free throw line and from the floor as well as Marist took charge in the opening quarter and never let up on its way to a 52-37 victory in the MWL opener for both teams. Senior guard Georgia Williams poured in a game-high 18 points in the first-ever Midwestern game for the Grizzlies and Michaela Dunn added 11, but it wasn’t enough for Ashland (5-4). Williams, Dunn, Ava Altig and Hannah Teixeira had four rebounds apiece. “We didn’t start off very well,” Ashland assistant coach Antione Perry said. “We kept it close but we weren’t playing very well on the offensive end. We weren’t looking to shoot the ball and that got us into trouble.” The Spartans (6-6), who have won three of their last four games, were led by Lauren Eagen’s 15 points. Tiffany Stockton-McLean added 13. Ashland looked like it would challenge Marist in the early going after Williams’ second 3-pointer of the day — she finished with three — gave the Grizzlies’ an 8-6 lead, but the Spartans scored the last six points of the quarter and never looked back. “We looked like we were still on vacation coming off a vacation,” Perry said. “I think there were some nerves, and also the unknown — we didn’t know much about Marist. We wanted to try to move the ball and we just weren’t aggressive enough early on.” Ashland hosts Phoenix on Tuesday. Perry hopes the Grizzlies can build on Friday’s solid fourth quarter, which saw Ashland outscore Marist 17-16. “We played more aggressive defense and were more aggressive driving to the basket (in the fourth),” he said. “We need to carry that over to the next game and do that for the entire game, not just the fourth quarter.” MARIST (52) – Harrison 0, Yates 0, Laing 2, Haney 5, Knudtson 3, Silver 2, Lange 0, Peterson 2, C. Boys Basketball At Eugene, already up 26-18, Marist buried Ashland with a third-quarter surge in a 63-42 Midwestern Conference blowout Friday at Marist High. The Spartans, who shot 51 percent (25-for-49) from the field, outscored the Grizzlies 24-11 in the third to blow the game open in the MWL opener for both teams. Collin Malcolm scored a game-high 18 points, including 11 in the first half, to pace the Grizzlies (5-4). Jack Feinberg added five for Ashland, which shot 47.3 percent (18-for-38). AJ Bartko hit four 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 12 points for Marist. Ashland 9 9 11 13 – 42 Marist 15 11 24 13 – 63 Women’s Basketball At Eugene, Chandler Gabrio hit a tie-breaking free throw with 20 seconds to go and Northwest Christian held to to stun 15th-ranked Southern Oregon 95-92 Friday at the Morse Events Center. Southern Oregon’s Autumn Durand missed a potential go-ahead jumper with nine seconds left and Northwest Christian’s Hannah Frederick drained two free throws for the final margin in the Cascade Conference barnburner. Southern Oregon (12-2, 3-2 CCC) had won four straight against the Beacons (5-7, 3-2). Alexi Smith scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Raiders, while Courtney West added 20 points. Southern Oregon shot 52 percent and led 52-46 at halftime. Andrea Gloss scored 22 points on 11-for-17 shooting to lead the Beacons. Men’s Basketball At Eugene, Jack Hackman’s buzzer-beating putback gave Northwest Christian a wild 66-64 victory over 16th-ranked Southern Oregon, Friday at the Morse Events Center. Southern Oregon’s Tim Weber scored on a reverse layup with under 20 seconds to go to tie the game, but the Beacons clinched the upset when Hackman cleaned up an off-balance miss by Travis Pacos. The ball went through the net just before the horn sounded. After a brief meeting, the referees counted the shot and ruled that there was no time left. The loss dropped Southern Oregon to 13-3, 3-2 in the Cascade Conference. Northwest Christian improved to 10-3 and 3-1. Weber had 14 points, 11 assists and three blocks to lead the Raiders.
