Crucial to good journalism is the distinction between news stories and editorials/opinion pieces. I understand that there is no such thing as pure objectivity and that the choice of stories to cover in the Tidings will reflect the interests of its readers (and thus be quite different for more reasons than geography from the Miami Herald, which was my prior hometown paper). But today’s story begins “It’s unlikely the Founding Fathers could even faintly foresee how their Second Amendment, assuring an armed citizen militia, could be construed to mean unlimited automatic assault weapons ...” There are some minor quibbles: the gist of the story is about background checks — which is the issue before the Oregon Legislature; the lead paragraph shouldn’t talk about assault weapons, which is marginal at best to that issue. More important, it is written as if the intent of the Founding Fathers is an uncontrovertible fact — to assure an armed militia. That is a highly controverted position; the Supreme Court may be wrong but they are not crazy wrong to construe what is a highly ambiguous text to provide for an individual right (as all the other Bill of Rights amendments do). This slap at the Court — and those Darling disagrees with — may seem uncontrovertible in Ashland (as per the person in the street quotes), but it isn’t and it shouldn’t be treated as such in a news story. Mary Coombs Ashland Columnist generalizes The op-ed by Jay Ambrose about the disputes over Indiana’s law protecting religiously based refusal to provide service to certain customers seems to decry bigotry of all sorts. But more closely read, it demands toleration of right-wing bigotry while criticizing liberals as hypocritical. The author tries to generalize from the behavior of a few angry and highly illiberal extremists to tar all those on the other side. Meanwhile, he ignores the actions of equally extreme anti-abortionists who have not just threatened, but burned clinics and murdered doctors in pursuit of their beliefs. We should not generalize that behavior to all those who oppose abortion on moral grounds. I once had my life threatened when I dented a BMW owner’s car. This does not mean that all BMW owners are crazy or violent. I would respectfully submit that a column asking for patience from all sides while Indiana sorts through a contentious issue would promote discussion instead of raising blood pressure. Productive discussions rarely begin by conflating the position of one’s opponents with their most radical and irrational allies.
