The campaigners had sought clarification of existing state protections against sex-based discrimination, the ability to become pregnant, gender identity, and decisions related to health. Campaigners Wanted to Repeal the Constitution’s Recognition of “One Man and One Woman” as a Legal Marriage Their IP 33 called for the repeal of an existing provision in the state constitution, which reads “only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or legally recognized as a marriage.” In a statement released by Equal Rights for All last Friday, campaigners acknowledge “the fear, sadness and anger” their decision may cause, “especially for members of the trans, LGBTQ+, and reproductive rights communities.” “This is a particularly difficult time, as the federal government attacks our rights, freedom, and basic humanity. However, members of our coalition are committed to continuing to fight back, while also holding the decision that IP 33 is not the vehicle for the fight at this time.” The campaign was supported by Basic Rights Oregon, the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon, Planned Parenthood Action Oregon, and the Latino Network.
