No person or group should feel Ashland is no longer a safe community. I've been following the discussions, have written to a city councilor and feel the main point of "public safety" is being talked around rather than being addressed. Many discussions deal with various agendas, but until our police chief and mayor acknowledge the real topic is public safety and its impacts on the community (socially and economically) we will continue down a dead-end road. Please stop trying to be politically correct and pursuing agendas that are unclear and unrealistic such as dog kennels in a national treasure like Lithia Park and special treatment for a class of citizens, etc. We need a sound policing strategy on managing what should be the number one community priority: public safety. We need leaders in place that will not talk around the problems or make excuses by telling the community what we cannot do. Please tell the community what we can and will do to solve our problems. Len Hilaire Ashland Give a gift of funds Many of us have so much already that giving more stuff at this time of the year can seem like an exercise in excess consumption. On the other hand, the generosity of many people towards local families and individuals who are suffering is compassionate and commendable. An additional possibility is the gift of reaching beyond Jackson County during the holidays to acknowledge remarkable small organizations that are helping the destitute in other areas. One of my most-recommended, little-known groups is The Haiti Tree Project ( www.thehaititreeproject.org ), with a minuscule budget, that enables local Haitians to grow seedlings and plant them to begin to reforest. These are mangoes and citrus trees that will provide permanent cash crops and recapture the soil on a devastated landscape that was deforested to make charcoal years ago. This is a crucial step for the Haitian people to begin to repair their land and rebuild, after their horrible earthquake. Another smaller-budget group right here in Southern Oregon is the Soda Mountain Wilderness Council ( www.conservationalliance.com/organizations/soda-mountain-wilderness-council/ ), adding to and protecting our precious, unique wild areas here where we can all hike and benefit from the beauty and wildlife we are blessed with. Giving a gift of some funding in the name of friends or family to organizations such as these is right up there with the best things we can be doing for the holidays. Bonnie Johnson Ashland Dog attacked deer While walking in Lithia Park this week, I saw a pit bull type of dog chasing down a young deer. When the deer ran into the creek, the attacking dog knocked it down and tore huge chunks from the deer’s flank. The owner, a young man (who looked homeless), tried calling the dog. It ignored him and continued the attack. As I screamed at the man to do something, he then casually took off his shoes and waded out to try and pry the dog away — now at the deer’s throat. The creek water was swirling with blood. I couldn’t stand to watch anymore and ran back to the skate park to ask the attendant to call for help. I returned, but the dog and its owner were not there. Neither was the deer. With the creek flowing swiftly and the deer small, I figured it had been swept downstream. I reported to the ranger’s station what had happened. The dog had a newish neon orange harness — If you see this dog downtown, beware. Judy Hoikka Ashland Less Trump, more Bernie Please increase the coverage of Bernie Sanders and decrease the coverage of Trump. Doing a search on the Daily Tidings website over the past three months returns three times the amount of articles for Trump; why is that? We get it already, Trump is a straight-up racist whose only goal seems to be dividing the citizens of our country. Bernie on the other hand is actually talking about trying to improve the quality of life of everyone in our country, not just the 0.01 percent.
