I immediately wrote a check for their major donor campaign. Rather than address Mr. Barickman's claims, I prefer to focus on services which Peace House staff provide in their commitment to non-violence and a better world. Peace House provides resources to empower other groups, such as the disability advocacy group DUDE. Peace House gives trainings in non-violent communication and has also organized a series of Town Hall meetings. When Peace House sponsors a protest, they distribute leaflets on non-violent codes of conduct, urging respectful treatment of others and discouraging property destruction. Peace House organizes lectures on global justice by internationally known speakers. As U.S. military recruiters gain further access to our school children, Peace House has started a program to educate youth about alternatives to military service, as well as students' rights to protect their school records from military recruiters. The community recently requested a conscientious objector center. Peace House re-activated this program by training volunteer counselors to help young people build case files for conscientious objector status. Uncle Foods Diner, the free community meal, is a Peace House program. Peace House staff volunteer in the kitchen each week. The new Walker Fund Peace Garden teaches children organic gardening as an act of service. The garden grows fresh vegetables for the Uncle Foods meal. Peace House is promoting a culture of justice, inclusion, and non-violence in the world by starting here at home.
