The second-ranked Grizzlies rode a fantastic opening quarter and five turnovers to a 35-14 victory over 10th-ranked Summit in a battle of Class 5A football powers at Summit High School in Bend. Max Montgomery had two interceptions and an 80-yard touchdown catch on the first play from scrimmage, Ryne Robitz rushed for 119 yards and Ashland’s defense held Summit’s highly-touted offense scoreless in the second half as the Grizzlies (3-0) swatted away the upstart Storm (2-1) in one of the night’s premier Oregon prep matchups. “We did what we needed to do and we got the job done,” Ashland coach Charlie Hall said. “The defense did a great job getting turnovers. We turned the ball over twice in the red zone, so I thought we left some points on the board with those turnovers. But it’s still a win against a good team.” The Storm outgained Ashland 365 yards to 337, but the Grizzlies’ ball-hawking defense more than made up the difference, picking off Summit quarterback John Bledsoe three times and recovering two fumbles. Ashland fumbled the ball away three times as well, but an efficient performance by quarterback Kyle Weinberg coupled with a steady run game allowed Ashland to wrestle away control before halftime and keep the Storm at bay down the stretch. Weinberg completed 12 of 20 passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns without an interception and also ran for 29 yards. Robitz scored twice, and Montgomery and Parker Layton combined for six catches, 149 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Ashland also had three sacks by Colin McGuire, Wyatt Ireland and Michael Pruitt. After two straight standout performances to start the season Bledsoe struggled at times against the Grizzlies, completing 15 of 25 passes for 144 yards. Summit’s running game kept the Storm in contention for the better part of three quarters, however, as Sean Kent rushed seven times for 95 yards and Jason Garcia 20 times for 98 yards. Down 28-14 after a scoreless third quarter, Summit drove to the Ashland 25 and was in position to narrow the gap but had it taken away when Montgomery picked off Bledsoe at the Ashland 18. That proved to be Summit’s last gasp. Ashland stymied the Storm into a four-and-out on its next possession — Summit went for it on 4th-and-six at its own 20 — and the Grizzlies scored the putaway TD four plays later. “You gotta hand it to our kids,” Hall said. “Late in the game we ran the ball and ran the clock out. I’m really pleased with that. We weren’t able to do that last week. “We struck hard and fast, which is hard to do on the road. I think that first touchdown pass to Max really set the tone for where our kids’ mindset was.” Ashland took a 28-14 lead into the halftime break following a wild final three minutes that included two turnovers, a botched field goal try, a near pick-six and a last-second dash toward the end zone. Already up 20-14, Ashland had converted a 3rd-and-one and a 4th-and-two on a long drive and was facing another third down at the Summit 16 when Nicky Weinberg caught a pass at the 10 before fumbling the ball away. On the next play, Bledsoe’s pass to Cam McCormick was intercepted by Montgomery at the Summit 31 and Montgomery ran it back all the way to the goal line. Robitz then cashed in for the Grizzlies, plowing in on a direct snap, and Weinberg’s two-point conversion pass to a wide-open Max Atteberry made it 28-14. The Grizzlies had a golden opportunity to add to that lead after Theo Whitcomb’s one-handed interception at the Summit 18, but they eventually settled for a short field goal that was sabotaged by a bad snap. Summit then drove all the way to the Ashland 28 to set up one last play with two seconds left, but Bledsoe couldn’t find an open receiver and was ran down at the 16 to end the half. Ashland fired the first shot when Weinberg dropped back and took his time scanning the field before hitting Montgomery in stride to give the Grizzlies a 7-0 lead only 12 seconds into the game. “Anytime you can do that it lifts you up and sort of demoralizes the other team,” Hall said. “But we tried to calm them down and remind them that at that point there was still a lot of football left to be played.” When Summit answered with a six-play, 80-yard drive it looked like defense would take a back seat. It didn’t work out that way. Ashland drove another 80 yards on 10 plays to retake the lead 14-7, with Weinberg’s 6-yard pass to Layton serving as the clincher. Ashland’s Walker Shibley forced a fumble on Summit’s next possession, and the Grizzlies capitalized five plays later when Weniberg hit Pruitt for a 3-yard touchdown and a 20-7 Ashland cushion.   Ashland 20 8 0 7 – 35 Summit 7 7 0 0 – 14 A – Montgomery 80 pass from K. Weinberg kick)   Women’s Volleyball At Portland, Paulla Pinheiro had 14 kills and six digs and Lauren McGowne 35 assists to lead 15th-ranked Southern Oregon to a 27-25, 25-13, 25-15 Cascade Conference win over Warner Pacific on Friday at C.C. Perry Gym. Motade Atanda added 13 kills and seven digs and Nikki Keller eight kills and four blocks, as the Raiders charged back from an 18-12 first-set deficit and improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in league play. Concordia (4-6, 2-3) was led by Devan Belshe paced the Knights with 10 kills.   College Cross Country At Portland, the Southern Oregon men placed five runners in the top 10 to dominate the Cascade Conference Preview Meet Friday at Fernhill Park. Jared Hixon placed second to lead the second-ranked Raiders, whose 28 team points easily outdistanced second-place Eastern Oregon (66) on the 8,000-meter course. In the women’s race, a 5k affair, Summer Cano placed seventh and the 15th-ranked Raiders took third. Concordia All-American Matthew Clowes won the men’s race in 24 minutes, 21 seconds, while Hixon was second in 25:14. Also for the SOU men, Max Runia was fourth, Zach Boyd-Helm fifth, Kevin Jorgensen eighth and Ray Schireman 10th.
