Grizz netters bounce back: Van Lehn, Stone, Van Landingham help rout Panthers Wire Reports MEDFORD - Ashland, the preseason favorite to defend its Southern Oregon Conference volleyball crown, rebounded from an opening- night loss and swept South Medford Tuesday, 25-10, 25-23, 25-19. Both teams were playing their second matches in successive nights. Ashland had fallen to North Medford on Monday, and South prevailed in a taxing win over Crater. Ashland put together several runs that enabled the team to pull away in the first match. The Grizzlies had a five-point stretch and three, three-point skeins. The Panthers were much more competitive in Game 2 after trailing 21-8. They roared back to within 24-23 before Ashland closed it out. Rachael Bailey, Christine Meyerding and Stephanie Anderberg served most of the points in the comeback. For Ashland, Chelsea Van Lehn had 11 kills and hit .500 for the match. She also had seven digs and two solo blocks. Corey Van Landingham recorded six kills and nine digs, Lindsey Stone notched 24 assists and Chey Hale had five aces. For the Panthers (1-2, 1-1 SOC), Jen Mendenhall tallied nine kills on 14 attempts and no errors. She also had four blocks. Emily Marshall and Meyerding each had eight digs, and Anderberg contributed 26 assists. Boys Soccer At Salem, Ashland (1-2) hit the opening score before South Salem answered with three first-half goals to beat the Grizzlies 3-1 on Tuesday. Austin Buell converted for the Grizzlies near the front of the goal mouth off a pass from Rick Ferguson at the eighth minute. The Saxons tied the match at the 15th minute on a goal by Dillon Powers. South Salem (2-1) added other goals in the first half from Brendan McBrien and Francisco Martinez. Ashland coach Eisa Tiaa Toutou praised the performances of junior goalie Justin Greenberg, strikers Ferguson and Fabian Garcia and senior sweeper Evan Dahlquest. Girls Soccer At Ashland, both teams scored in the first half of a 1-1 non-conference tie between Ashland and Hidden Valley on Tuesday. Ashland struck first on a goal by Danya Rose-Markle at the 10:30 mark. Hidden Valley (2-0-1) tied the match at the 27th minute when Nina Jaramillo's pass split two defenders and freshman Kayla Flick won a one-one-one battle with the Ashland goalie. The Mustangs received strong play from freshman goalie Melissa Henner and defenders Amber Jones, Ashley Elledge and Bailey Southern.
