Health Watch: The rise of wearable fitness tech Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Feb. 13, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Feb. 13, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News TIP OF THE WEEK Having trouble staying motivated because you’re not getting any feedback to keep you going? Welcome to the era of the wearable activity tracker. Get instant-feedback about your activity habits, including your sleep, and it might just change your life. In case you’re still on the fence, activity trackers aren’t going anywhere in 2015. In fact, this trend will continue to grow with new versions and wrists being outfitted each day! What’s the big deal? The reason for the fitness tracker’s popularity is simple. In order to make a lifestyle change and create healthy habits, you need motivation and feedback. That’s exactly what an activity tracker brings to the table! The band on your wrist is your accountability partner and personal trainer wrapped up in one. Will my health actually improve by wearing this? The device will give you the data, but the work is up to you. If you walk 9,000 steps, will you take the extra 1,000 to reach the recommended daily amount? If you notice that your sleep patterns are poor, will you change your habits in order to snooze better? An activity tracker can’t physically make you do anything. That part is up to you! What’s the best tracker for me? With a plethora of models on the market, deciding on the right activity tracker can be a workout in itself. Do your research and decide what features you need. Most options will track steps, distance and calories burned. Newer models are now tracking heart rate and sleep patterns. It all depends on how much do you want to pay. Do you want it to sync directly to your phone? And lastly, what color will you sport? — Life Fitness CHILDREN’S HEALTH Sure shots: A senior Centers for Disease Control official said the current measles outbreak may become “endemic” if parents continue to opt out of having their children vaccinated. As of Jan. 29, the measles outbreak that has been traced to Disneyland in late December has now spread to 14 states, with 84 cases reported altogether. Unlike Ebola, measles can spread without direct contact, and patients can transmit the disease before they begin to show symptoms. — More Content Now SENIOR HEALTH Listen up: Hearing loss is one of the more common ailments afflicting people ages 65 and older, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. If you are unable to hear people on the phone, often ask people to repeat themselves and have to strain to listen to a conversation, you’ll want to see a doctor. Treatments for reduced hearing includes hearing aids, cochlear implants and learning how to lip read. — More Content Now NEW RESEARCH Out on the field: A new study reported in the journal Current Biology on competitive athletes has found that players’ performances may at least partially depend on how the game they’re playing syncs up with their internal clocks. The study took a look at when athletes woke up and what time they competed at, finding that athletes’ performances dropped within a certain number of hours after waking up. — More Content Now BOOK PICK ‘The New Health Rules’ by Dr. Frank Lipman and Danielle Claro “The New Health Rules” wades through the often contradictory information that bombards us daily and delivers more than 100 tips that will improve every aspect of our health.
