The two-day meet is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m., and the league’s seven schools will reconvene Saturday at Springfield High. The winner of each event qualifies for the Class 5A state meet May 22-23 at Hayward Field in Eugene. Participants can also earn the right to compete for a state title by meeting OSAA’s state qualifying standards, which are available at osaa.org. Thompson-Siporen figures to have an eventful week. The senior enters the meet with the MWL’s best mark in the 110-meter hurdles (15.54 seconds), the discus (165 feet, 10 inches), the javelin (179-0), the pole vault (14-6) and the long jump (22-11). Helfrich, who guided the Ducks to the national championship game in January, graduated from Southern Oregon University with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1996. He played football for the Raiders from 1992-95, during which he set SOU single-season records – all of which have since been broken - for pass attempts, passing yards, passing touchdowns and total offense. Helfrich, who was inducted into the SOU Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, was named an NAIA All-American honorable mention in 1993 and was also an NAIA Scholar Athlete and FA Academic All-Star at SOU. College Wrestling The Southern Oregon University wrestling team will hold its annual Spring Dual outside of McNeal Hall’s main entrance at 5 p.m. Friday.
