Now, people all over the country know it, too. Zundel was honored last month at the American Association of School Administrators' annual conference with the association's National Women in School Leadership Award. The award recognized "a demonstration of strength in both personal and organizational communication, professionalism, and community involvement.” Those who know Zundel best say she more than embodies those qualities. Jana Carole, a former chairwoman of the Ashland Schools Foundation who nominated Zundel for the award, says the longtime administrator connects with students as few educators can. She makes a point of quickly knowing every student in her school by name, but also understanding what makes that individual student tick, Carole said. The AASA said of Zundel that she has enhanced academic achievement, college and career education and the professional development of teachers while increasing engagement with families and the community at large. Ashland has long been noted for excellent public schools, and the teachers and administrators who staff those schools make them what they are. The community is fortunate to have Zundel — and many other top-notch educators — working hard to produce well-rounded, well-educated young people who will make Ashland proud. The community at large should take a bow, as well.
