The trio will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at Paschal Winery, 1122 Suncrest Road, Talent. Solar Eclipse Viewing Party ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum and Southern Oregon Skywatchers will host a partial solar eclipse viewing party from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, at ScienceWorks, 1500 E. Main St., Ashland, weather permitting. The outdoor event is free. Telescopes with solar filters will be available for safe viewing of the sun. In the Rogue Valley, the eclipse will start at 1:44 p.m. when the moon begins crossing in front of the sun. The maximum eclipse will occur at 3:09 p.m. when the moon covers 56 percent of the sun's diameter. The partial eclipse will end at 4:27 p.m. Special solar filter viewing glasses will be available for purchase inside at the ScienceWorks Explore Store. Inside the museum, visitors can see the effects of sun exposure using a skin imaging device from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 to 4 p.m. A variety of solar science activities are planned inside from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Admission to the museum is $7 for children ages 2 through 12 and seniors 65 and older, and $9 for teens and adults. Mary Maudlin & Mad Tom Vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Pat O'Scannell and Kevin Carr will present Halloween songs and stories from the realms of folklore and folk music of Ireland, Scotland, England and a bit of Norway at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Paschal Winery, 1122 Suncrest Road, Talent. Ashland New Plays Festival The festival will bring four winning playwrights from across the nation to Ashland for a week of theater events. Works by James Harmon Brown, Bob Clyman, Michael Edan and Jack Karp were selected from nearly 200 submissions. "Irreversible" will be staged at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, and 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. "The Groyser" will be staged at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, and 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. "A Little Quid Pro Quo" will be staged at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26. All plays are at the Unitarian Center, 87 Fourth St., Ashland. Tickets to the play readings are $15 and are available at Paddington Station, 125 E. Main St., and at www.ashlandnewplays.org. A playwriting workshop is from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the OLLI space Campbell Center, 655 Frances Lane, Ashland. The cost is $10. Puss 'N' Boots Costume Ball and Auction The 23rd annual fundraiser for Friends of the Animal Shelter will be from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St., Ashland. Festivities will include a catered dinner and no-host bar, a silent auction, a costume contest, a live auction and live music by the Robbie DaCosta Band. Tickets cost $45 and can be purchased at www.fotas.org, at Paddington Station or by calling 541-482-8172. Spiders and Scorpions Learn the difference between insects and arachnids and why spiders and scorpions are so important for humans and the environment during a spiders and scorpions program from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Talent Library, 101 Home St. Join John Jackson of Bugs-R-Us for hands-on time with live arachnids including a tarantula, whip scorpion and non-venomous emperor scorpion. Participants will receive a spider ring and spider identification sheets.
