I know that school closures, skimpy course offerings, overburdened staff, crowded classrooms, and stringent budgets pull us apart and pit neighbor against neighbor. Today, Oregon spends $611 less per student in today’s dollars than in 1992. Class sizes are 30 percent larger than the rest of the U.S., with elementary classes the second largest in the country. Our school year is one of the shortest in the country. (sources: Legislative Revenue Office and Oregon Department of Education). But we must not pit school funding and basic services against one another. Both serve the common good, leading to jobs, stability, and sound government. What can be done? At this time, all of us must work to inform our board candidates and legislators of our concern for education — not only locally but throughout the state. We must work to identify solutions that guarantee stable and adequate funding for education and basic human services. Oregonians are famous for their persistence, resilience, and creative solutions. Let us rise to the occasion. Ann Magill Talent Take action I’m angry and depressed and don’t want to take it anymore, but realize that my vote didn’t stop the onslaught: A war on those who happen to live in the wrong country, a war on the less affluent in this so-called democracy which seems increasingly more like a theocracy or fascist state (your choice) every day, and a war on all of the measures that have been taken in the past to protect the environment. The latest attack on road-less areas leaves Bush blameless again since the governors and ultimately, the Forest Service make this doomed or protected decision regarding our forests. Since the Forest Service is in the logging business, big time, we know what the verdict will be for our wilderness and wildlife. What will be left after three more years with this environmental terrorist run amok? It is a helpless, hopeless, no-win scenario if we do nothing. One thing we can do is write, e-mail, call our senators, representatives, the Forest Service, and the president if you think he really listens or cares.
