--> --> Pinehurst to join with SO band for benefit concert Amid the current budget debates and concerns about test scores, inspiring models of success in public education can be found very close to home. For example, a group of middle school students from Pinehurst School will perform with the Southern Oregon Concert Band in benefit performance at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the Medford Armory at 1701 South Pacific Highway. Starting from zero, within three or four years these youngsters have joined the top ranks of middle school bands and have earned the respect of accomplished adult musicians. You can find similar examples of achievement throughout Southern Oregon schools in academics, drama, debate, athletics and many other fields of endeavor. What makes education work? At Pinehurst School, it is personal attention to each student, teachers who care, lots of family and community involvement, and a modest investment of public and private resources. Most importantly, perhaps, it is challenge. Who would have thought that a school with 30 students could create an outstanding band? Similarly, we can create a superbly educated generation of Oregonians, budget crises notwithstanding. We just need to invest our attention, our time and sufficient resources in our children.
