At times, when the frustration starts to boil up, I want to take it personally. But as a friend in the business correctly reminded me today, we can't take it personally. We have thick skin. It comes with the job. All too often the public scrutiny over the paper focuses on the mistakes. We are quick to assess our mistakes and even quicker to seek solutions so they won't happen again. But rarely are we as quick to acknowledge our successes. We rarely get the kudos for the significant stories we do break. Last week was a telling example: Both our murder resolution story and our sports story on Ashland High Schools athletics director's resignation were breaking news, neither ran by other newspapers. Just a day ago we broke the story on Les AuCoin's departure from SOU. In the last couple of months there have been many other such examples of fine journalism. So I just want to offer my staff a quick congratulations for the fine work. It also gives me a strong argument against the charge that the Tidings doesn't offer a unique news perspective anymore. That said, many readers and non-readers remain unconvinced. We still get letters saying we don't provide enough local news, and other letters that say we don't have enough national news. We have comments from readers that say we are too much like the Tribune, and others from readers that say they are dropping us in favor of the Tribune. Frankly, you are the reader and it's only your opinion that matters. My friend is right. We have thick skin, and we are developing big ears to keep listening to what our readers want. We will never please everybody, but within the Tidings is a strong resolve in our mission and our ability to do it better with each passing day. We love the chance to continue to prove ourselves. We encourage our readers to keep sending us feedback and keep helping to make us a better paper. For as much as people complain about us, we know that if we don't do it, nobody will. We are Ashland's local newspaper and we have to succeed to keep an independent news voice specifically for the people of Ashland. I personally want to thank all of our readers who help us with this ongoing effort.
