The victory improves the Grizzlies to 4-0. They’ll go for five straight wins to start the season Saturday afternoon against Yreka. “We kept playing hard, we kept playing well and we kept playing together during this whole game,” Ashland head coach Ken Lathen said. “The difficult thing is going to be to come back tomorrow and play well after a game like today.” Phoenix took a quick lead on Alex Hanscom’s 3-pointer, but didn’t score again until Tawyna Tidwell’s bucket made it 22-5 with 52 seconds left in the first quarter. Josie McDermott then hit a 3 at the buzzer. Ashland poured it on in the second quarter, with Kelsey McKinnis hitting two 3s and McDermott and Jamie Roupp adding one apiece. Ashland finished with seven treys overall, all in the first half. ROUPP Roupp, a senior guard, led everyone with 15 points, three steals and two assists, while McDermott, a junior guard/forward, had 14 points, four rebounds and three steals. Senior forward Rheana Laipply pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for Ashland and freshman post Brenna Heater had 12 points and four rebounds. Nobody scored more than six for Phoenix, which finished with just eight field goals against Ashland’s high-pressure defense. The Grizzlies had 16 steals. The Grizzlies led 39-6 at the break and 51-16 after three. Roupp scored 12 of Ashland’s 25 first-quarter points, including seven during a two-minute stretch to help Ashland stretch an eight-point lead to 17.
