Community gardens grow all over the world and are very popular in urban areas were space prohibits personal gardens. People come together and till the ground, plant seeds, tend gardens, organically solve pest problems, help each other and strengthen the community. As Ashland fills in its empty lots and welcomes higher-density housing, rather than sprawl, this is a great way for our citizens to keep connected to the earth, and each other. Many people who live in our town do not have the space or sunlight at their homes for personal gardens. The park commission is currently evaluating what the best use for the Vogel property is. I believe that the garden is a great use for a portion of that land. We have parks for dogs, skateboarding, sports, and many other personal interests. Our city parks celebrate the diversity of our city and its inhabitants. Lets keep space to support the gardeners in our community as well. Kemberly Wirt-Barton Ashland Marijuana law unchanged The Supreme Court ruling does not overturn Oregon's law permitting the use of medical marijuana. State and federal laws are no different today than they were before. Oregonians spoke overwhelmingly in favor of medical marijuana by passing the Oregon Medical Marijuana Act, and that law still stands in our state. The Supreme Court has passed the problem of legalizing marijuana to the Congress. For federal laws to change, our representatives have to make this change happen. In Oregon, taking medical marijuana medicine on the recommendation of a doctor for a legitimate illness is not a crime — nor should it be. Suspending Oregon's medical marijuana program — by not issuing cards — violates Oregon law and the will of Oregonians, who solidly passed the Oregon Medical Marijuana Act.
