My response is that if the thought of your children or grandchildren dying of thirst, hunger, heat and chaos doesn’t call for emotion, then what in the heck does? Global warming is all too real and is accelerating faster than predicted. Solutions are available, but require the power of government to make them happen in time. To start, we need legislation that will tax or cap greenhouses gas emissions ... and we need it yesterday. So demand that your Oregon representatives fight for a future. Hound them to support and vote for HB 3740, the only bill currently offered in Oregon that addresses all the greenhouse gases. Then ask Congressman Greg Walden what he is doing to stop greenhouse gases at the federal level. (To date he has quite wickedly promoted them.) And then tell Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley to stop promoting natural gas, a major source of methane leaks. If there is one time in your life to get emotional, it is at this 11th hour of global warming. Don’t just sit there playing your fiddle while the world goes up in flames; get involved and help save it! Lee Lull Talent LNG makes no sense Some of the many reasons against having the Jordan Cove LNG pipeline project: Canadian company Veresen stands to profit at Oregon's environmental expense as the large pipeline and huge right of way crosses hundreds of streams and rivers, damaging forests, wetlands and farmlands and bringing downright scary possibilities! The idea of jobs for Coos Bay sounds good on the surface, until you realize the reality; only 104 local, longer-term jobs are anticipated! Property tax benefits of the project are negated by the hundreds of millions lost by a 15-year reduced tax rate being offered to Veresen (a very long time in an industry with future changes, shifts to new energy sources, etc.) Coos Bay and Oregon citizens could be left with nothing to show for all the risk and potential environmental damages. Over the years I've been lulled by the term "natural gas" to think it was the cleanest, least harmful of our energy sources, but I was surprised to learn in recent studies that the use of fracking releases so much methane that it's actually worse than coal, with 85 times the global warming impact of carbon dioxide! This LNG project makes no sense. Susie Stevens-Briody Ashland What a town The little photo of green bags on the Tiding’s front page to alert readers to place their bag by their front door for the Ashland Food Project bi-monthly pickup is most appreciated. The significance of the alert goes a long way when the results of this endeavor are viewed. In Saturday’s pickup, 140 neighborhood coordinators collected 20,827 pounds of food from some 2,500 Ashland households. Pam Marsh, manager of the Ashland Emergency Food Bank, noted that these “gifts fill our shelves and I’m reminded all over again how those magic green bags transform our operation and our community.” Recently, AFP expanded its collaborative partners to include Ashland business sponsors who agree to have their businesses highlighted on reminder cards attached to each bag. In Saturday’s pickup, our sponsor was the Ashland Food Co-op. We appreciate their community involvement in this program. Further, in the area of community involvement are the 70 volunteers who ably unload the green bags and stack the foods. Notably among them are Ashland High School students who receive community service credits for their pickup day participation. What a program. What a town.
