Robert Petetit | For the Tidings His team hardly challenged through a cupcake opening-week schedule, Ashland High head boys’ basketball coach Rick Cornelius wanted the Grizzlies to be pushed in their inaugural Ashland Rotary Hoop Classic. He hoped to face a team that could shut down Ashland’s offense and strain its defense, all while exposing the Grizzlies’ weaknesses. Port Angeles (Wash.) was happy to oblige on all counts. The Roughriders contained Ashland’s fastbreak and squelched the Grizziles’ final comeback attempt to secure a 65-58 Classic championship-clinching win Saturday night at Mountain Avenue Gym. The Grizzlies never managed to get in sync against the Roughriders’ pressure defense, turning the ball over 17 times. Still, Ashland trailed by just three points (61-58) after Ryan Pittman hit two free throws with 1:09 to go. The Roughriders extended their lead to five on two free throws with 41 seconds left and Ashland missed three straight shots on the other end, including two 3-point attempts by Sam Littleton, to seal its fate. “We didn’t handle their pressure real well,” Cornelius said. “They mixed it up on us enough to cause us problems. We didn’t handle the ball particularly well and made some decisions out on the floor that really kind of hurt us.” Ashland’s first loss of the season dropped the Grizzlies to 3-1 heading into this week’s Trident Tournament in Oxnard, Calif. After that, Ashland has one more tournament (at Redding, Calif., Dec. 28-30) to prepare for the Southern Oregon Conference season, which kicks off Jan. 6. Between now and then, Ashland will be trying on fine-tuning an offense that looked flustered and one dimensional against Port Angeles. That one dimension usually came in the form of senior forward Josh Cornelius, who scored a game-high 19 points on 7 of 10 shooting while also pulling down eight rebounds. Senior guard Colin Reinstedt (12 points) also picked up the Grizzlies with his own stretch of hot shooting — he snared eight boards as well — but that was about it for Ashland’s perimeter offense. Pittman, a senior center, added 12 points. Littleton struggled in a six-point effort. The point guard turned shooting guard was forced to quarterback Ashland’s offense after starting point guard Cameron Clement, a solid sophomore, fouled his way out of significant playing time. “(The Roughriders) really got in the passing lanes today and forced us to be where we didn’t want to be and that really beat us in the end,” Clement said. Senior guard Chris Stone (15 points) and junior forward Stefan Walker (14) combine to score 29 points for the Roughriders, who are coached by Erik Lathen, son of AHS girls’ basketball coach Ken Lathen. Port Angeles used a 9-4 run to take a 16-9 lead into the second quarter. Ashland rallied behind two three-point plays — one a 3-pointer by Littleton — to tie the game at 17 and the Roughriders led by just one at the break. Reinstedt’s second trey of the third quarter gave the Grizzlies their first and only lead of the game at 39-37 midway through the third quarter. The Roughriders tightened up after that and led 46-41 going into the final quarter. There, Ashland got as close as a single point on a Cornelius 3 with 6:22 to go, but could never get over the hump. After the game, Port Angeles was presented the championship trophy. The Grizzlies received second-place medals. Reinstedt said the tournament was a success for the Grizzlies overall, but added that Ashland still has plenty of work to do. “Everybody’s going to have their nights,” Reinstedt said. “I think the more we get into the season, the more we can execute and the less it is about individual play. Anybody can score from right under the bucket and that’s our goal when we run our offense.” Port Angeles (65) — Stone 15, Walker 14, Acheson 11, Lane 8, Leduke 7, Breithark 5, Boudreau 3, Smithson 2, Kaisasz 0.
