The pecan located at 762 B Street was chosen this year's winner. We had many nominations to select the six finalists. The finalists were chosen based on their beauty, age, size, uniqueness, condition, and historical value. Also, a special thanks to Dick Streng's class at Lincoln School. We would like to invite you to join us again for celebrating Arbor Week this coming spring. Once again, Thanks, January Jennings Ashland Tree Commission Americorps helping give 'bright futures' I have served for the past year as an Americorps Member in the Bright Futures Program at Rogue Community College in Medford. My work is doing community education with women and men in the local community and RCC on the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault. I have noticed that issues such as domestic violence, poverty and lack of basic education may hamper a student's ability to focus on college. Many students are single parents and the only provider for their families. Poverty and lack of education, coupled with past and present abuse are factors that undermine confidence and the ability to compete in the job market. I have worked with students who put their lives together after incredibly difficult circumstances and went on to complete college to become successful, productive members of this community� all because of Bright Futures. Students take classes in career exploration, college orientation, and self-awareness. When they are finished with Bright Futures, students are more confident and able to adapt to college requirements. If anyone is interested in learning more about Bright Futures for themselves or a friend they can contact 245-7538. Financial aid is available for students and Winter Term classes begin Jan. 5. Alexa A. Priddy Americorps Member Community Educator Rogue Community College More air pollution? Do you want to trade your health for industial development? Why do two of our Jackson County Commissioners propose to DECREASE air quality standards for the Rogue Valley? Why do these County Comissioners want to allow MORE air pollution in our beautiful valley? It appears that we have another instance of George Bush and his special interests working through DEQ and our local government to force the people of this country to accept less - so that special interests can have more. Shame on us if we let them get away with it! This valley belongs to the people, not the special interests. If you agree that this is our valley, protect our valley by contacting Commissioners Jack Walker and Sue Kupillas to register your disagreement with their support for the proposed air quality reduction and let Commissioner Dave Gilmour know that you support him in his opposition to the DEQ proposal. We need clean industries in our valley - let the polluters go elsewhere. Watch for a public hearing on this proposal toward the end of January and attend if you can because democracy is NOT a spectator sport. Joe Suste Medford Praise to Camelot Much praise and congratulations to Livia Genise, Director of Camelot! Theater in Talent. Camelot's scheduled "Pay What You Can" (PWYC) matinee performance of Oliver on Saturday, 12/20/2003 played to a more-than-packed house. People and entire families who would not normally be able (or willing?) to enjoy the pleasures of theatre were treated to a fine performance. The Camelot, and Livia's, dedication to ensuring theatre is available to all is a tribute to the heart and soul of theatre and creativity. Wouldn't it be wonderful if other theatres in the valley pursued this practice, one that is regularly scheduled at Camelot. Surely there is a way that creative, professional individuals and companies dedicated to such a vision could find a way for this to be instituted on some basis? One recalls that in times not far distant, theatre was available for all citizens to enjoy. Theatre is a precious gift worthy of being shared and enjoyed by all.
