Encouraging, because it signals the university's Board of Trustees will move forward quickly in finding a leader to establish a longterm path for the school. Worrisome, because while it is time to move forward, an overly compressed hiring schedule could lead to a hasty decision. We have confidence, however, that the work of finding a new president is in good hands with the board and see no reason the process cannot be completed within the remaining eight months. Saigo had indicated a willingness to stay on for a third year after being appointed to fill the position on an interim basis in 2014. But he, the trustees and the university faculty later came to a different conclusion, agreeing that waiting another full year would be waiting too long. The faculty urged that long-term planning commence as soon as possible, something that would be hard to do if a leadership change didn't occur until 2017. This is no criticism of Saigo, who has brought a needed energy and drive to the position in his 15 months on the job. But the trustees know that this is a critical time for SOU, and no time to be waiting while a search for a president drags on for almost two more years. The new president will help set a new agenda for SOU. The sooner she or he can do that, the better.
