MONDAY December 22, 2003 - Subscribe - Contact Us Valley&State Backpage O&E Sports Archives Classifieds Faith&Beliefs Obituaries Revels December 9, 2003 Paper is lost in its direction as Tribune 'edition' I'm caught in a kind of Catch 22 with your Ashland "Edition of the Mail Tribune." I was wary from the outset having one company publishing both papers at this end of the valley. You know, media consolidation. My dilemma, after a few weeks of evaluating your new format and editorial decisions, is that I'm afraid to cancel my subscription. I'll explain soon. I do love the mast head. But, our already thin newspaper seems to getting thinner. The clarity of your color photos is marvelous. Back page, front page. An up-side is that it's easy to read the ads without my glasses. Soft news is up, travelogue and all. Food, Lifestyles, Body and Mind, Lifestyles. My favorite section of our local rag has always been the Opinion page. And thanks for prepping me on the changes there. I have a few issues though. As to your own opinions. This week you had two. One was a defense of a critical letter, not an editorial. Finally, tonight we get a proper editorial.. Left column. "OUR VIEW!" And it suggests lights in Lithia Park!! Of all things. O.K., maybe I missed the news about the demand. It is the only part of the town that isn't lit. And it's closed at night. Why not make stands on local, valley, state, national or international issues as the rule and run "Other Views" as the exception. I love the letters. The more the merrier. As to the commentary. Well, another issue here. Liberals. Thanks for Molly. Susan and Roger have been a little weak, dogs and Brokaw and all. Conservatives. We need more O'Reilly? He's hard to avoid these days. He does a fair and balanced job of cutting people off with his glib, dishonest and anti-intellectual tirades on the airwaves. And that fellow who believes that our nation has a moral, God given obligation to right the wrongs of the world? Hey, there are real, fair and balanced, intellectual conservatives out there. A few, anyway. So, here's the Catch 22. I have the sneaking suspicion that it would be financially much more comfortable for your company to have only one daily paper offered at this end of the Rogue Valley. I can only guess how long it will take before we see a for sale sign on the Tidings building. To begin with. But, why not anger and frustrate people like me by watering down our already translucent daily paper and 'help' us cancel our long running subscriptions to the Tidings, hastening the time when you will only have to publish one paper. I'm just sorry you folks bought this paper. Daniel Hamnett Ashland Cats need meat, but the meat can be treated well I'm concerned about the recent letter you printed encouraging people to feed cats vegan (meatless, dairyless, eggless) food. I've seen two or three cats who were on commercial vegan food. Each was scrawny; one filled out again after going back on normal cat food. Another vegan told me that after she put her numerous indoor cats on commercial vegan food, they did so poorly that she switched them back to food containing meat. Dogs may do all right without animal products (though to my knowledge, no research has proven it safe in the long-term). But I believe it's too risky to force a cat to go meatless. To me, it's as wrong as forcing a child to go without fruits and vegetables. I care passionately about the horrendous suffering of farmed animals. When I had a cat, I fed her a diet containing "cruelty-free" meat: just-postdated and discarded by supermarkets, left over from restaurants, etc. Our society wastes so much meat that I think it's easy for just about anyone to obtain meat for their cats without supporting the cruel meat industry. People don't have to choose between cats and fish--they can be kind to both.
