The decisions facing the city in the next four years are going to require an abundance of time and energy and I wish her well. It has been a long contest and I am sure we are both glad it is over. I would also like to thank everyone who supported my campaign. You know who you are. I doubt you will ever know how much it meant to me to have that encouragement and support and I hope to be able to work with each of you in the future. Michael Morris Ashland Voting machines cast doubt With regard to Craig Stephens letter of Nov. 4, I agree with him on every point except "This time tyranny won fairly." Throughout the country, exit polls were right on the money in projecting the winner, except in precincts in Ohio and Florida where "no paper trail" Diebold voting machines were used. For those of you that don't know, Mr. Diebold, the manufacturer of the machines, is a huge Republican supporter and we were warned about his plans months ago on Air America and Pacifica Radio. He claims that there is no way for these machines to have a paper trail, but the same machines being used in other countries have the trail. The Republican response to the situation was "People lied to the pollsters as they exited the polling place." How strange that voters only lied about how they voted in Ohio and Florida. Check out www.dailykos.com/ story/2004/11/3/53438/6175. Ed Dillon Ashland Bush's win simply frightful Those who hated Bush on Nov. 2 don't hate him any less now. There is no way this president can "heal the wounds of the campaign" because the wounds are actually four years old, and were only deepened by the despicable tactics of the Bush campaign leadership. Anti-Bush Americans are faced with a vision for the future of this country very unlike the vision so many of us shared and fought for way-back-when. How do we fight now, with half the country incapable of seeing beyond their own narrow perspective? It's frightful. Judith Stevens Medford Tidings letters lacking facts Reading the Tidings editorial page is like going to the Mad Hatter's tea party where the host and the guests share the same delusions. Take, for example, Carola Lacy's hysterical guest forum of October 19th about HR 163, the "draft legislation." First, Carola, the bill has nothing to do with the Pentagon, Rumsfeld or the Bush administration. All six of its sponsors were Democrats. Second, it was defeated on Oct. 5, by a vote of 402 to 2. Both "aye" votes were Democrats. The bill's defeat was widely reported except, apparently, in Ashland. The same day we were treated to two letters, one significantly exceeding the Tidings word limit, from Bush protesters whining about how their political expression was disrupted in Jacksonville by police enforcing the law. On the other hand, in Ashland, where freedom of expression reigns supreme, the life span of the Bush/Cheney sign I put out was less than eight hours and the "protesters" who destroyed it came on my property to do it. More trespassers for Kerry. Finally, Marie Jandreau informs us that Fox News is biased and the "media" lack integrity because "Rupert Murdoch has a monopoly." Surprise, Marie! Rupert doesn't own CBS, NBC, or ABC, all recently found by the Center for Media and Public Affairs to be giving Kerry "the best press of any presidential nominee" since they began tracking in 1988. If Fox is exercising too much freedom of expression for you, change channels.
