Ashland Ski & Snowboard Resort announced it will open Friday after last night's storm dumped a foot and a half of new snow on the mountain. "We're opening Friday," Rick Saul, marketing director for the ski area, said this morning. "We got 18 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours. Most of it came overnight." The latest snow, which comes on top of 16 inches that fell Monday night, gave the ski area a total of 45 inches at the base and at least 60 inches at the top, according to Saul. The wet nature of the snow has slowed down grooming operations. Ski area managers plan to operate all four lifts on Friday with limited groomed runs, he said. On average, the ski area opens Dec. 10, putting this week's opening right on schedule. Warmer temperatures and a rising snow level could bring rain to the mountain on Thursday, but Saul said the snow pack is sufficient to withstand any rain. "We're confident we'll be fine regardless of what happens Thursday. We do expect snow Friday and Saturday," he said. The snow level is expected to rise to 6,000 feet and stay there for a few days, according to National Weather Service Forecaster Rick Holtz. The base of the ski area is at 6,300 feet, Saul said. A shift in the jet stream will put the Rogue Valley on the southern edge of the massive air current, bringing warmer temperatures, rain at low to mid-elevations and snow at the highest elevations, Holtz said. The possibility of rainfall on snow in the mountains shouldn't be cause for alarm for Ashland residents, according to city of Ashland Public Works Director Paula Brown. There isn't enough snow accumulation this early in the season to cause floods, she said. A rain-on-snow event triggered the 1997 New Year's Day Flood that severely damaged Ashland and other communities. "It will be soggy," Brown said. "The creeks will come up, but it's not a flooding issue."
