The Tidings received a total of nine awards, including First Place in five categories, in the Division C group, which consists of daily newspapers with a circulation of less than 10,000. Because of the Tidings' redesign in mid-November, the paper only entered content from the final six weeks of 2003. Recognition was spread throughout the newsroom, with six staff members receiving awards. Leading the pack, Sports Editor Joe Zavala took two First Place awards: for best sports story and another First Place for best sports page. Editor Andrew Scot Bolsinger got an honorable mention for his local column, Downtown, which runs Fridays in the Tidings. News Editor Peter Hahnloser received Second Place for best editorial page and two Third Place awards: best section front or inside page design and best local column for The Powderhorn, which will return to the Tidings later this year. Chief Photographer Denise Baratta won First Place for best feature photo. Photographer Satsuki Doi took First Place for best news photo. Doi recently left the Tidings to return to her native Japan. Reporter Bill Choy was awarded First Place for best coverage of business and economic issues. As Ashland's hometown newspaper, the Tidings is proud to provide award winning coverage to our fellow residents. Congratulations to all our staff members.
