Brendan Dassey, the nephew of Making a Murderer 's central star Steven Avery, has had his conviction for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach overturned, Wisconsin's WISN reports . The state has 90 days to release Dassey from prison. Dassey was convicted on three counts -- first-degree intentional homicide, second-degree sexual assault and mutilation of a corpse -- in 2007 and was sentenced to life with no parole for 41 years. But on Friday, the court found Dassey's confession "involuntary" and noted Dassey's intellectual deficits in its ruling. Law & Order: SVU is doing a Making a Murderer episode, because of course Though Avery was the spotlight of Making a Murderer , it was Dassey's role in the alleged crime that was perhaps the most difficult to swallow. Documentarians Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos spent some of the strongest episodes on Dassey's involvement, bringing up evidence that implied Dassey's confession about acting as an accomplice to his uncle in the murder of Halbach was coerced by Manitowoc County police. Avery remains convicted of Halbach's murder, but is appealing the decision. Netflix previously announced that new episodes of Making a Murderer would be produced , offering updates on the case.
