The 11,000-square-foot building at 3300 Butler Creek Road originally was constructed for use as a church. An Ashland physician and spiritual shaman sought to practice Huichol shamanism there, and won a lengthy battle to have the property identified as a church, but then put the property up for sale in 2008. Norma Burton, minister at Unity in Ashland, has proposed a 15-bed residential treatment center, which would charge clients more than $30,000 a month. Neighbors of the property, situated on a winding dirt road, have raised concerns with Jackson County planning officials regarding the impact on the private road and other potential conflicts. Burton says the center would generate a maximum of five vehicle trips per day. Clients would stay 30 to 90 days, and would be transported to the center by van. The facility would certainly generate some vehicle traffic, primarily for deliveries of food and other supplies, and for employees to come and go. But that's a far cry from retreats that would attract numerous visitors and vehicles. Neighbors say they could live with a rehab center as long as certain conditions are imposed, including a road maintenance agreement and limits on future commercial use of the property. Those two items, at least, seem reasonable to us, and county planners should find a way to make the proposal work.
