The smoke is expected to continue to hover today, he said this morning. Turco did not have a timetable of when the smoke should diminish, but said it should occur once the fire is controlled and the prevailing winds dissipate it. The smoke led to a number of calls to the ODF office on Thursday with concerns a wildfire was burning nearby, Turco said. High winds fanned the fire burning on the north side of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation to 10,500 acres. About 810 people were fighting the Log Springs fire, said Roger Peterson, spokesman at the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center in Portland. The blaze was 35 percent contained, he said. Peterson said the fire was burning actively in an area called Beaver Creek Canyon, with spotting elsewhere. No homes were threatened, he said. Oregon Highway 9 remained closed to traffic between Simnasho and the junction with Highway 26, blocking access to the Ka-Nee-Ta Resort and Indian Head Gaming Casino. Motorists were being advised to use Travel Route 3 through Warm Springs, and watch out for reduced visibility due to smoke, Peterson said. Peterson said damp conditions Thursday evening could slow the fire's spread. "Hopefully with the higher humidity and lower winds, it won't make a run," he said. "It's in some pretty decent fuels out there - dry, dead downed materials, tall grasses."
