THEATER OSF presents its 28th Daedalus Project HIV/AIDS benefit has raised more that $1.5 million since 1987 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Aug. 20, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 20, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News The Oregon Shakespeare Festival will host its 28th annual Daedalus Project, a benefit for HIV/AIDS organizations. The 2015 Daedalus Project begins with the Daedalus 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, Aug. 23, and continues with a full day of fundraising activities on Monday, Aug. 24, that will culminate with the Daedalus Play Reading and Daedalus Variety Show. Since the first Daedalus Project was organized by OSF actor and director James Edmondson in 1987, the event has raised over $1.5 million for local, regional, national and international HIV/AIDS organizations. In the last 28 years, the Daedalus Project has created a tradition of remembrance, celebration and collective action for OSF’s company, community and audience. “Each year I am inspired by the creativity and passion from our OSF company members and community as they collaborate on this event,” says Claudia Alick, associate producer of community events at OSF, in a press release. “It’s been magical to witness the ideas being formed by the hundreds of volunteers on this event and the realization of them into art and events. Emily Dickinson said ‘Hope is the thing with feathers’ — and this event will be full of both.” The Daedalus 5K embarks from the OSF campus at 9 a.m. Aug. 23; entry is $25 in advance or $30 the day of the race. The Aug. 24 activities begin at 11 a.m. with the Daedalus Bake Sale in the Angus Bowmer Theatre, the Daedalus Lemonade Stand in the OSF courtyard and the Daedalus Arts and Treasures Sale in the Thomas Theatre, which will include the always-popular Daedalus Bears, inspired by the season’s plays and created by the OSF Costume Shop. This year’s Daedalus Play Reading will be "The Baltimore Waltz," by Paula Vogel. Directed by Eugene Ma and featuring performances by Erica Sullivan (Anna), Will Dao (Carl), David Kelly (Third Man), and musical arrangement and composition by J. Alexander Diaz, the reading will take place at 2 p.m. in the Angus Bowmer Theatre. Tickets are $25 and are available online at osfashland.org or by calling 800-219-8161. The Daedalus Variety Show — the project's main event — will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Allen Elizabethan Theatre. This year’s show is directed by Sara Bruner, with stage direction by Mandy Younger. In addition to $15,000 transferred to the Rex Rabold Fund, $143,000 by the 2014 Daedalus Project was distributed to the following HIV/AIDS organizations: OnTrack, Inc.–Alan F. Collins AIDS Project ($57,000), HIV Alliance ($20,000), Siskiyou County HIV/AIDS Foundation ($15,000), Africare ($5,000), GRACE USA ($11,000), Strength for the Journey ($2,500), SCHAP Community School ($7,500), artsINSIDEOUT ($5,00), and Our House ($5,000). OSF artistic associate James Edmondson had the original idea for an HIV/AIDS fundraiser 28 years ago. OSF Artistic Director Emeritus Jerry Turner named the event the Daedalus Project after the story of Daedalus from Greek mythology. Daedalus and his son, Icarus, were imprisoned in a labyrinth by King Minos, and by crafting wings from wax and feathers, Daedalus created a way out of the maze.
