Police also seized psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana from the residence in the 700 block of Oak Street during the largest drug bust in Ashland in several years, Ashland Police Chief Terry Holderness said this morning. Jonah Shore, 29, was arrested for violating his probation, second-degree child neglect and endangering the welfare of a minor. Emeth Brandov-Ysrael, 24, was arrested for the latter two crimes. Both remain in Jackson County Jail, where their bail is set at $8,000 each. More charges, likely including the manufacture and distribution of controlled substances, are pending, Holderness said. Finding a large-scale opium poppy growing operating in the state is highly unusual; usually the drug is imported into the U.S. in the form of heroin, he said. "It's really unusual to have what looks like a professional opium grow in Oregon," he said. "It's certainly the first one we've ever seen. I've never seen one before in my 33 years in law enforcement." Ashland police officers discovered evidence of the operation at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, when they assisted the Jackson County Parole and Probation Department in checking whether Shore was compliance with the terms of his probation, police said in a news release this morning. Shore was on probation because he had been convicted of delivering marijuana. While inside the home, police found living conditions in the house were likely endangering the health and welfare of Brandov-Ysrael's daughter, who lived at the home. Police also discovered evidence of controlled substance manufacture, delivery and use. Police detectives served a search warrant at the residence later that day and located numerous items related to controlled substance manufacture, delivery and use. They found opium poppy plants, marijuana plants, psilocybin mushroom spores, marijuana packaged for sales, evidence of opium pod harvest and processing, and drug paraphernalia, they said. Detectives are continuing their investigation and ask anyone with information to contact the Ashland Police Department at 541-482-5211. —Hannah Guzik DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jul. 22, 2010 at 10:25 AM Updated Jul 22, 2010 at 10:32 AM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
