Oregon’s 30-7 victory over Texas provided retiring defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti with a more gratifying sendoff than Mack Brown had in San Antonio. But after the program had appeared in four consecutive BCS bowl games under Chip Kelly, including a national championship game, competing in a December bowl game was not something the returning players wanted to experience again this year. So after the holiday break, veteran players made a commitment to lead the talented 2014 Ducks to greater heights. “It started from the Alamo Bowl against Texas,” senior center Hroniss Grasu said last Saturday after third-ranked Oregon improved to 10-1 with a 44-10 victory over Utah in the Autzen Stadium finale. “The very next week we all sat down and talked about our goals and talked about what we needed to do to achieve those goals. “Everybody hasn’t stopped doing whatever it takes to accomplish those goals.” Winning the North Division, something the 2012 and 2013 teams were unable to do, was an important first step. Now Oregon, which is 7-1 in Pac-12 play, is in position to win the conference championship and play its way into the inaugural College Football Playoff. Regardless of what happens at Oregon State, the Ducks will face the South Division winner on Dec. 5 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., for the Pac-12 title. The up-and-down Beavers (5-6, 2-6) can erase Oregon from the projected final four bracket with a Civil War upset on Saturday at Reser Stadium (5 p.m., ABC). “There’s like a Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde kind of attitude that they’ve had as far as playing,” Oregon running backs coach Gary Campbell said of Oregon State, which followed an impressive upset of Arizona State with a 37-13 loss at Washington. “But you can bet when they suit up against us they’re going to give us their best game.” The Ducks believe that the key to beating their rivals will be to treat them the same way they did Colorado. Since the Alamo Bowl, Oregon’s players have rededicated themselves to the “Win the Day” process established by Kelly. It started with the winter strength and conditioning program. Players say they are eating better, getting more rest and going out to socialize less. “We’re a lot smarter than we have been in previous years. We’re paying more attention to our bodies and what we put into them and what we have to do to keep it going and keep it fresh,” senior linebacker Derrick Malone said. “I have to commend the coaches. They’ve done their research, they’ve done their studies and we’re an elite program because we don’t go with tradition. We’re always trying the next step and always trying to get better.” Second-year coach Mark Helfrich said the offseason approach was tweaked with the hope of finishing stronger. Oregon was 2-2 last November, including a last-minute 36-35 victory over Oregon State. So far the Ducks are 3-0 this November, outscoring opponents 140-53. “There’s tremendous leadership on this team, tremendous maturity and guys that have been around here forever,” secondary coach John Neal said. “There are a lot of guys that have been in our program and have been successful in our program. Those kids want to keep the momentum going.” The light bulb went on early for several true freshmen, including leading rusher Royce Freeman and special teams star Charles Nelson. “That’s the hardest thing, I think, is making sure in recruiting you identify the guy that wants to be a part of that kind of thing. We tell them, and very honestly, it’s exceptionally difficult,” Helfrich said. “It’s unconventionally hard, and we’re going to support you unconventionally because of it.” In order to play, newcomers must completely buy in. “The shorter the time lapse from you showing up to jumping in the system, the better,” Helfrich said. “For guys who show up and go, ‘I used to power clean this way, I played man coverage like this, I studied like this.’ And then a year and a half later they go, ‘Yeah, you were right about everything.’ “That’s a year and a half of meh. Versus if you can make that 14 seconds by the time you show up on campus and jump into the process, it’s going to happen a lot faster for everybody.” Coaches and players said Oregon practiced really well on Monday. It has been a common theme this season, which usually leads to a good week of practice and a victory on Saturday. Even the sky-is-falling criticism after the Ducks’ loss to Arizona, which occurred on a Thursday night, didn’t pull the team apart or get the creatures of habit out of the routine. “We usually have our best practices on Monday. Although we’re a little banged up, a little tired, the way we come out really shows how the rest of the week is going to go, how our mindset is,” Malone said. “Recently, we’ve had great Mondays and our intensity has been great. … We had great practices all week that Arizona week, it just didn’t fall into place. Since then, it has been even better.” Helfrich said he doesn’t make rah-rah speeches in the locker room before the games. “You need to have a pep talk to have a great Monday, a great Tuesday and a great Wednesday,” Helfrich said. “If you’re not ready to go on Saturday, we screwed up in recruiting.” The Ducks have been grinding toward their lofty goals since circling the wagons after the Alamo Bowl. “It’s cool when players control that. We don’t control everything,” Neal said. “I always tell my guys, I’m the most useless guy in the game. What do I do? I stand there, I’ve got a good seat.” Follow Ryan on Twitter @rgduckfootball .
