But the Black Tornado turned the corner on the Grizzlies during the opening day of the Class 4A state girls golf tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Course Monday. Behind Kacie Kinney’s 6-over-par 78, North finished with a 351 to tie Bend for sixth heading into today’s final round. Ashland is eighth with a 356. Ashland’s Stephanie Johns is tied for third with Grants Pass’ Justine Hix. Both shot a 77, and are four strokes behind leader Molly Boyle of Jesuit. Johns, the SOC district champion, took third last season and is on pace to do the same this year after beginning with a 4-over 36 on the back. Kinney had a rough start with a 43, but fired a tournament-low 35 to end the day, despite a double bogey on No. 9. North’s Snow Powers added an 85, which is her season low in counter tournaments, while Christina Thompson shot a 91 and Sheena Knight a 97. Ashland’s Stephanie and Elaina Graham were well below their regular-season pace by shooting an 87 and 88, respectively. Girls Class 3A/2A/1A State Tournament At Redmond, Phoenix’s Miranda Akerman shot a 20-over-par 92 to finish tied for 22nd after the first day of the state tournament at Eagle Crest Resort Course. North Valley’s Ariel Huff is tied for 30th with a 95. Boys Class 3A State Tournament At Redmond, Phoenix’s Kris Kaufman shot a 5-over-par 77 to tie for eighth-place after the opening day at Eagle Crest Ridge Golf Course. Phoenix is tied for fourth with three other teams at 325. Siuslaw is first with a 306. Phoenix’s J.T. Compher and Henley’s Blaine Corkill are each tied for 12th place with five other competitors with a 7-over 79 at the two-day event. Siuslaw’s Jesse Schutte led all scores with a 3-under 69.
