OUR VIEW Our View: The art saga continues Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jan. 8, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jan. 8, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News If the City Council members who voted to ask artist Susan Zoccola for a second "vision" of a work for the Gateway Island believe that will satisfy those who dislike the first one, they are likely to be disappointed. Zoccola is the artist whose proposed sculpture, "Gather," was selected by the city's Public Arts Commission in a process that stretched over more than two years and six public meetings, culminating in visits by the finalists and presentations to the public. None of that mattered to critics who said, variously, that the process was flawed, the chosen work did not represent Ashland or clashed with the historic downtown, or that that it couldn't be built as designed. None of this should come as a surprise to anyone who has watched the selection of public art anywhere. Art and its appreciation are inherently subjective, and no two people will agree on whether a given work deserves taxpayer financing or public display. Last month, we said the art commission had done its job, and it was time to move on. The council, however, has been persuaded to drag out the process even further by asking Zoccola for a second proposal. The good news: The council will make the final choice, with public involvement. The bad news: The controversy will rage on for up to six more months. The critics, especially those who have decided Zoccola is the wrong artist for Ashland, are unlikely to be placated, even if the second concept is chosen.
