Rahzel and DJ-JS1 at Historic Ashland Armory Rahzel, The Human Beat Box member of the Grammy-winning group The Roots will be performing with DJ-JS1 of The Rock Steady Crew at The Historic Ashland Armory, starting at 8 p.m. on April 11 as part of The Greatest Knockouts World Tour. Opening the show will be Oregon favorite Lyrics Born and Ashland's own Eastern Sunz. The show is an all ages event, with doors opening at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18 in advance and $25 at the door and can be purchased at Low Down Boardshop and The Music Coop in Ashland, Progressive Audio in Medford, and Listen Here in Grants Pass. The self-defined "vocal percussionist," Rahzel (rhymes with gazelle) uses just his lips, cheeks, gums, and Adam's apple: the quintessential hip hop art form. Rahzel does not play an instrument. He is the instrument. His mockery of instruments and cascade of sounds leaves audiences astounded, wondering, "is he for real?" Best known as a member of the Grammy Award-winning band The Roots, hip hop's cutting-edge live band, Rahzel says, "Being with The Roots enhanced what I was doing even more," he says. Over the past years he has collaborated with artists such as Erykah Badu, LL Cool J, Branford Marsalis, Common, Q Tip, Me'Shell N' Degeocello, Chico DeBarge and hip hop's legendary Slick Rick.
