He could fly away, but the crow doesn’t leave the backyard of Abigail Lewis and Michael Mollo on the south end of Talent. Lewis, who works for Live at the Armory, which produces events at the Historic Ashland Armory, was driving on Main on the north end of Ashland near the Manor Motel on Sunday, July 3, when she saw a crow in the left turn lane in the middle of the road. “He was practically baking in the sun,” said Lewis. She saw he (or she; it’s not easy to determine a crow’s gender) was still alive, so she wrapped him in a towel and took him home. Lewis and Mollo spent the next few days feeding the bird hamburger meat and water with an eye dropper. “We didn’t think he was going to make it and then one day he flew into a tree in our backyard and stayed there,” said Lewis. They named him Kaua, a Native American word for crow. Now, he flies down and lands on one of their shoulders anytime he’s frightened. “He’s a teenager, so it only took him about 24 hours to warm up to us,” said Lewis. Kaua’s leg is broken and possibly permanently damaged. His wing is also injured, but should heal within time, according to Lewis. “We strongly are against cages,” said Lewis. “Nothing likes a cage.” Kaua is allowed inside the house whenever he pleases. “We let him inside with us when he wants,” said Lewis. “He’s allowed wherever he feels comfortable. We hope it will help him recover faster…We are trying to keep him as wild as possible.” Kaua walks with the couple, flying a few feet in front and then landing on a shoulder. He plays games, communicates and brings them trinkets. Crows are even more intelligent than chimpanzees, according to Lewis. They not only use tools, but make their own tools to use. “I don’t think people should make wild animals pets,” said Lewis. “But we should all take care of each other no matter what species we are. Crows can live 30 years or more, according to Lewis. “We want him to find his crow people, but I think he’ll stick around,” said Lewis. Contact Tidings intern Caitlin Fowlkes at [email protected].
