Poll: Keep religion out of public symbolism Staff Reports A plurality of Internet voters support removing religious references and symbols from public buildings, agreeing that to do so risks elevating one faith over another. A total of 371 people logged on to answer the question, "Should religious references and symbols be removed from public buildings?" Earning the most votes, with 47 percent or 176 votes, was support for removing religious symbols from public buildings. Following closely at 33 percent, or 122 votes, were those who feel that our nation was founded on religious principles and they should not be removed. Twenty percent of respondents (74 votes) said such items should be removed if the symbols or religious references go beyond paying homage to the past and start denigrating differing beliefs. This week's poll question, posted Saturday, is: "Should the $800 million three-year tax increase passed at the state level go to voters?" The Tidings Weekly online poll is an unscientific measurement of public opinion and only reflects the views of those who choose to participate. Its sole purpose is to provide greater public input on a variety of issues.
