Find prior episodes at www.dailytidings.com. Yesterday, I interviewed Jenny Stanner about her missing boyfriend, Jeremy Trout, a local filmmaker, who was researching pawn shops. She thought his going undercover to explore this industry might have been a factor in his disappearance. She also disliked the topic of his research. Business was growing. Blue had opened shop in a quaint building in tiny Talent, near the Downtowne Coffeehouse. As her assistant, I was getting her input on my interview. Sunlight engraved the letters spelling out Blue Investigations on the picture window and danced across the laminate floor. A dreadlocked woman walked a chicken on a leash across the street. Spring was in the air but winter didn’t let go easily in southern Oregon. “Did you ask her the basics, like did Jeremy have any enemies, anyone who might want to do him harm?” asked Blue. She was the lead investigator and was mentoring me on this case. “Yes. I did ask that, but Jennifer couldn’t think of anyone,” I said. “OK, so who else are we interviewing for this case?” asked Blue. I gave her a short list of people, none who knew him well. “This is it? This is all of it?” asked Blue. “Yep.” I said. “Hmmm.” Blue was thinking, perhaps now was the time to pounce “I was wondering about going undercover myself, like Jeremy did,” I said, holding my breath for her reaction. She turned to study me, her face narrowing to a point. “Do you have any idea how hard it is to succeed at going undercover?” Blue asked. “I was hoping you would train me,” I said. “I don’t think you’re ready.” Blue turned her chair back to her desk, writing something. “How will I ever be ready if you don’t teach me, if you don’t give me a chance?” I pleaded. Blue kept writing but now she was shaking her head too. “Hey, I used to be an actor. I studied the Stanislavski method for chrissakes. And other methods too. I know how to build a character, how to embody the role, how to commit.” I stood up and leaned over her desk. Blue turned around in her chair. I sat back down across from her. “I’m happy you’re fired up to learn. And I agree that you could be a talented undercover operative. But the work can be very dangerous and doubly so for this case.” “Why doubly so?” “Because whoever snatched Jeremy probably blew his cover first. These folks are going to be on alert for imposters, for people pretending to be something they’re not.” Blue twisted a pencil in her hands. “I understand. But could we at least start with some training? Give me some homework.” I pulled out my notebook and peered at her meaningfully. Blue thought for a moment. “OK. First piece of homework. That woman who was walking her chicken earlier, build a fictional character on her. What drives her? Where did she grown up? What does she do for a living? Make up a name and entire backstory. Come in here tomorrow as that character and convince me. Make me believe you. “ I smiled. This was going to be fun.
