LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, April 27 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Apr. 27, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 27, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Harriet Tubman was armed Amy Goodman's "Tubman: the currency of resistance" ran as a commentary in Saturday's April 23 Ashland Daily Tidings. First: Amy Goodman is linked to "Democracy Now!" Does the American public need reminding our nation isn't a democracy, but is a republic? The John Birch Society in Appleton, Wis., www.jbs.org , has the moral high ground on this issue. Second: Harriet Tubman was a heroine instrumental in the Underground Railroad, which assisted African slaves to escape to freedom in the north. Everyone knows that. What is far less known is the fact that Harriet Tubman carried a revolver and was not afraid to use it. In my own Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009 Klamath Falls Herald and News letter: "Gun rights protect all races, not just a few" remains archived for public reading at www.heraldandnews.com . Third: "The Racist Roots of Gun Control" by Clayton E. Cramer gives us a detailed and in-depth treatise of how "civilians disarmament laws" in America historically targeted both African slaves prior to the Civil War (1861-1865), and also via Jim Crow laws which were enacted in the aftermath following 1865. This, along with "No Guns For Negroes" can be accessed online at www.jpfo.org . JPFO Inc. is "America's Aggressive Civil Rights Organization." Tubman's father likewise trained his daughter in the skills of surviving in the woods, outdoors, and what was then still largely wilderness, despite the fact that Harriet Tubman was largely illiterate. This enabled her to orient herself and endure the elements, terrain and weather. "The key to freedom is the ability to defend oneself" is rightly quoted in "Why Switzerland Has The Lowest Crime Rate In The World." Also, "Gun Control: Line Up For Your Ball and Chains." Both these can be viewed online at You Tube. Finally, "Tubman's Replacement of Jackson Highlights Currency Changes," Thursday, April 21, 2016 via The New American at www.thenewamerican.com gives insight into this proposed change to our $20 bill. James A. Farmer Ashland Voting for Thomas The county commissioner races are among the most important elections because the decisions they make affect our day-to-day lives in the Rogue Valley. This year, we have the opportunity to elect a commissioner who welcomes opinions, gives freely and responsively of his time and is forthright. Many recognize Jeff Thomas’s acumen, especially those who have had the opportunity to work with him or observe his work as the Medford School Board chairman, as a coach and president of the Rogue Valley Timbers, the largest youth soccer association in the valley, and doing business with him as the owner of Connecting Point Computers. Jeff understands our community and will help it grow. Your vote is critically important to this year’s election. Please join me in voting for Jeff Thomas for county commissioner. Eliza Kauder Ashland Vote for Marsh I want a state representative who looks me in the eye, who you know is really listening to you, who is a great human being and has a good sense of humor! I consider the latter quality of great significance when having to deal with all the personalities involved in matters politic. Pam Marsh is experienced dealing with many types of people and doing many types of work. She wouldn’t be running for state representative if she didn’t really want to be there. She’s getting my vote — you?
