But Wine Enthusiast Magazine's decision to include this region on its list of the top 10 wine travel destinations in the entire world may be an eye-opener for those less familiar with our neck of the woods. The February edition of the magazine ranks Ashland as No. 10 on a list that starts with Las Vegas — presumably as much for the renowned entertainment as for the wine — and includes Bordeaux, France, along with regions in Australia, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Portugal and Austria, along with Paso Robles, Calif. It seems Wine Enthusiast wine columnist Paul Gregutt had not tasted Oregon wine outside the Willamette Valley for some time, and was more than favorably impressed when he served as a judge at an Umpqua Valley Winegrowers' Association competition and visited Ashland as well. Wine growers and enthusiasts here have known for a long time that the Southern Oregon climate allows the cultivation of many grape varieties that can't be grown upstate, and that wines made from many of those varietals rival the best available anywhere. More wine travel means more tourist dollars for the local economy, which benefits everyone. As Gregutt noted in his opening paragraph on our region, "The story of Oregon wine no longer begins and ends with Willamette Valley Pinot Noir ..." We knew that already. Now many more people will.
