Denise Baratta | Ashland Daily Tidings Plans for the 1.4-acre site propose two large mixed-use buildings, with parking underground and several living/working units attached to the back. Along the southwest of the property, six single-family houses will help transition into the residential neighborhood. The project is being proposed by Archerd and Hal Dresner of Archerd & Dresner, and another local developer Russ Dale. Plans include an open green space where there is talk of holding the Tuesday Grower's Market, which would bring it back downtown, Archerd said. "A significant portion of the retail space will become an integrated cancer treatment center, which will offer the treatment of both traditional and alternative medicine," Archerd said. Archerd said negotiations are ongoing. In a preliminary presentation to the Historic Commission on Nov. 3, there were concerns about the size of the project, the largest to date for downtown. "We are hoping to revitalize Lithia Way. The whole intent is to create a second Main Street," Archerd said. Overall, 37 living units are proposed, and an ordinance requires that 10 percent of the units be available to people of moderate income, or those who make 80 percent of the area median income, said Brandon Goldman, Ashland's housing specialist. The planning process so far has included more public collaboration than any other private development, Archerd said. Three public meetings were held during which residents were invited for input. Archerd said another public meeting may occur.
