Hummel, who announced his resignation last week, has by all accounts been an able, even-handed leader who maintained the district's record of excellence while avoiding divisive battles. One such potential clash involved redrawing district attendance boundaries to equalize class sizes among elementary schools, a task Hummel was able to accomplish without alienating parents. The district held community meetings to hear their concerns and share data the necessity of adjusting class sizes, which ultimately led to a plan everyone could live with. If that is a quality you would like to see in Ashland's next superintendent, or if other traits are important to you, make your preferences known in a public meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. at Ashland High School. A meeting at Walker Elementary school was held Tuesday evening. If there is one attribute we would like to see in the district's next leader, it is a more long-term commitment to Ashland. Hummel says he is departing for "entirely personal" reasons having to do with his family, and that he had to decide between "establishing a more permanent home in Ashland" or moving back to Idaho. Hummel's predecessor, Juli Di Chiro, held the job for 13 years before retiring. An applicant's family situation is not a subject a prospective employer can legally ask about, but it's unfortunate that a search process that took two years led to a hiring a superintendent who will serve for only three.
