The stumble cost the Grizzlies a chance to host a first-round game. On Friday they made Hillsboro pay for the inconvenience with a first-half eruption that few saw coming. No. 10-seeded Ashland scored six touchdowns and amassed 467 yards of offense in a spectacular opening two quarters to take a 42-0 halftime lead and coasted the rest of the way for a 52-22 win over the seventh-seeded Spartans in a round of 16 rout at Hillsboro’s Hare Field. “I’m never surprised with this group of kids,” Ashland coach Charlie Hall said. “They break your heart one week and then they’ll do amazing things. Kind of a paradox. But maybe we learned some things a few weeks ago and were able to move forward.” The Grizzlies already led 7-0 before an electric nine-minute stretch in the second quarter that saw them score six touchdowns, three of 23 yards or more. By the time Kyle Weinberg hit Parker Layton with a 23-yard touchdown pass with 31 seconds to go in the half the game was all but over. The win earns Ashland a quarterfinal date with second-seeded Silverton, which pulverized Pendleton 54-6 Friday. The game will be played in Silverton. “They’re a good football team and they’re well coached,” Hall said of Silverton. Weinberg passed for 302 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 63 yards and two more scores to lead a Grizzly offense that finished with 556 yards of total offense. Shashi Penn had two catches for 126 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown that gave Ashland a 34-0 lead. Also for Ashland, Ryne Robitz rushed for 77 yards and a score, Kiowa Jayne for 72 yards and a score, and Parker Layton had five catches for 62 yards and another touchdown. Ashland’s defense also executed its game plan to perfection, limiting Hillsboro to 76 yards in the first half and intercepting three passes. Hillsboro was 0-for-5 on third-down conversions and 0-for-1 on fourth downs in the first half. Weinberg started the second-quarter fireworks with an 8-yard keeper, capping a 14-play, 88-yard drive. Three minutes later Robitz ran in from the 2 to make it 20-0. Ashland recovered a muffed kickoff return and Nicky Weinberg scored on a 26-yard reverse to make it 26-0, and the Grizzlies used a fake-PAT to get the 2-point conversion and a 28-0 lead. Kyle Weinberg hit a wide open Penn on the long bomb next, and Layton’s TD grab completed a three-play, 58-yard drive and mercifully wrapped up the first half. Five of Ashland’s seven touchdown drives required three plays or less. Hall credited Kyle Weinberg, who completed 13 of 18 passes, with leading the charge. “That was really key for (Weinberg), to come back and have the kind of game he head,” Hall said. “I was really impressed with his running tonight.
