August Dawn Mansfield, 27, was in the Jackson County Jail Tuesday afternoon on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, attempt to elude police, possession of methamphetamine, reckless endangerment and reckless driving, according to jail records. His bail was set at $27,000. Medford police said Mansfield also faces a charge of  third-degree theft because of an alleged theft at the Highland Drive Purple Parrot Friday, though that didn't initially appear in his booking information. Ashland police reported officers had been on the lookout for a stolen black 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage, since Jan. 26, when it was taken from the 100 block of South Mountain Avenue. That car was spotted twice in Medford last week at the Purple Parrot on Highland Drive near Siskiyou Boulevard. It was first seen Wednesday, Jan. 28, when Mansfield is believed to have walked into the business wearing a mask, and started walking toward the front counter. When an employee asked him to take off the mask, the request apparently startled the man and sent him running out the door to the Mitsubishi, police said. Mansfield is suspected of returning in the same car two days later and stealing less than $100 while an unidentified woman appeared to act as a distraction by stealing from the tip jar, then luring an employee outside while Mansfield went in a back office to grab cash. At 10:05 a.m. Tuesday, Ashland police spotted the Mirage and pulled it over near Garfield and Iowa streets in Ashland. A passenger got out of the Mirage immediately and put his hands up, but police say Mansfield drove away. Police initially pursued him but stopped for safety reasons. The passenger, a man, was released without being charged. About 20 minutes later, Oregon State Police troopers spotted the vehicle at Fern Valley Road near North Phoenix Road, OSP Sgt. Jeff Proulx said. They apprehended Mansfield after a short pursuit that ended with the car striking a curb and coming to a stop near the Interstate 5 on-ramp. Police found a hedge trimmer and two nail guns, which they believe to be stolen, in Mansfield's possession. Anyone who believes the tools belong to them is asked to contact Detective Bill Ford at 541-774-2236. Mansfield has two additional open court cases against him, according to court records. One is a January case where he is charged with possession of methamphetamine and heroin, the other a March 2014 case where he is charged with possession of methamphetamine, unlawful use of a weapon and coercion.
