BUSINESS PROFILE Ashlander starts up a natural pet food supplement business Comment By John Darling For the Tidings DailyTidings.com By John Darling For the Tidings Posted Apr. 6, 2015 at 7:47 PM Updated Apr 7, 2015 at 11:05 AM By John Darling For the Tidings Posted Apr. 6, 2015 at 7:47 PM Updated Apr 7, 2015 at 11:05 AM » Social News Three years ago, with no business experience — but lots of knowledge about health and nutrition — Christine Kleiman of Ashland started manufacturing and marketing a powdered supplement that goes in dog and cat food and contains a range of naturally-occurring seeds, herbs, algaes, minerals, clay and nutritional yeast.  Called Super Essentials, it’s found its way to the shelves of Shop'N Kart, the Ashland and Medford food co-ops, veterinarians' offices and other spots around the county — and is just about to launch with a West Coast marketing agency.  It’s been a long haul for the German-born Kleiman, 51, doing everything by herself as a home-based business, grinding out and mixing the ingredients, designing the labels, packaging the product and mailing out orders from her internet site, www.motherearthpet.com. It comes in 8 ounces, retailing at $20 to $24, and 16 ounces for around $39.  Given that two-thirds of businesses fail in the first two years, how have you done this alone? There’s a saying in Germany, “Need makes the master.” If you have to do it, you will figure out ways and I did. It’s been a day-to-day thing. I’ve studied health and nutrition since I was a child. It’s the center of my universe. I knew my dog needed something more than was in commercial food. I found the basic recipe in a holistic nutrition book and added superfoods, foods that people buy for themselves. I didn’t know the business couldn’t be created with no money or experience. I was determined to give it a go. Now I know it can’t be done (joke) but the product is absolutely fabulous and people love it. They see what it does to their animals. I eat, sleep and dream this business. What’s in it?   Chia seeds, nutritional yeast, lecithin, chorella, spirulina, kelp, mearl red marine algae, pyrophyllite clay and stinging nettle leaf. Chia has the highest omega-3 of any non-marine plant. Yeast is the best source of B complex, high in minerals. Lecithin is great for brain and nerves. Chorella is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Spirulina has many nutrients and antioxidants, regulates blood sugar, fights infection and increases energy. Kelp has a range of vitamins, plus iodine and trace minerals. Algae has calcium and raises alkalinity. Clay has 65 vital minerals, detoxes the body and supports immunity. Nettle is a diuretic, cleanser and anti-inflammatory.  What are the results? In just a day, owners see shinier coat, better digestion, increased energy. It brings healthy joints, whiter teeth, longevity and better immunity. All the ingredients come from nature and are organic and GMO-free. Nothing is synthetic. How is it served to dogs and cats? You can sprinkle it on their normal food, but commercial pet food is extremely processed, not very alive. Dried food is not natural at all. So many nutrients are missing. But it’s very convenient. Myself, I feed my dog raw meat and any kind of vegetables, plus this powder, of course. Broccoli, cabbage, carrots, pumpkin, beans, zucchini.
