--> --> Commissioners slating rally on Elk Creek Dam Jackson County Commissioner Ric Holt is helping to organize a peaceful protest Saturday against the notching of Elk Creek Dam. The rally will be held at the Elk Trail School on Elk Trail Road, four miles north of Shady Cove along Highway 62. Organizers say the rally will begin at noon sharp with the national anthem and the pledge of allegiance. Holt said the keynote speaker will be Ken Olson, former project director for three U.S. Corps of Engineers dam projects in Southern Oregon - Lost Creek, Applegate and Elk Creek. The theme of the rally is "Don't Blow No Hole in Elk Creek Dam - Save it, Fill it!" according to Holt. "We need the dam for water storage, flood control, saving our fish, providing irrigation and to ensure the future of the entire Rogue Valley," Holt said in a prepared statement. Notching of the dam would provide fish access to the upper reaches of Elk Creek for spawning, but Holt and others say any notching would lessen the physical integrity of the dam. Holt and commissioners Jack Walker and Sue Kupillas plan to attend the rally, Holt said. Participants are asked to come early, bring a lunch and homemade signs.
