Pernice and Ogilvy had 10-under-par 134 totals on the North and South courses at the Canoe Brook Country Club in heading the 14 qualifiers who earned berths for the Open at St. Andrews on July 14-17. Former Ashland High standout Jason Allred, Duffy Waldorf, Alex Cejka of Germany, Joe Durant and Steve Gutschewski finished a stroke back at 135 on the rainy day that mimicked British Open conditions without the chill. Tom Byrum was alone at 8-under-par 136, while Bo Van Pelt, Daniel Chopra of Sweden and Australians Scott Hend of Australia and Robert Allenby also earned berths with 137 total. Wilhelm Schauman, a Swede who carried his own bag, and Richard Barcelo got the final two berths by recording birdies on the first hole of a seven-man playoff that included former U.S. Open champion Corey Pavin. The group finished at 138. Others who failed to qualify were Steve Elkington, Justin Rose, Bob Tway, Tom Kite and Jose Coceres, who all finished at 139. Pernice, who finished 11th at the Barclays Classic this past weekend, had six birdies and an eagle on the North Course. The previous course record was a 65 posted by fellow PGA Tour player Len Mattiace. Pernice, who got the only spot in a U.S. Open qualifier earlier this month, lost a ball in the rough on his second hole in the afternoon round en route to a 70. Ogilvy had a pair of 67s in winning his second big qualifier this month. He was the medalist for the U.S. Open qualifying at Waterville, Ohio. For Waldorf, qualifying was sweet. He missed by a stroke at Congressional last year. Fourteen spots also were at stake Monday in England, with England’s Simon Khan and Ireland’s Peter Lawrie topping the 120-player field at 8-under 132 after rounds on Sunningdale’s Old and New courses. Khan had two 66s, and Lawrie shot 65-67. John Bickerton, Robert Coles, Simon Dyson, Marcus Fraser, Andrew Oldcorn, Peter Baker, Alastair Forsyth, Ian Woosnam, Patrik Sjoland, Andrew Butterfield and Robert Rock also qualified. David Geall, Kenneth Ferrie, Henrik Stenson, Jean-Francois Lucquin and Tom Whitehouse will return Tuesday for a playoff to determine the last spot. Two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal (70-69) failed to qualify. Twelve spots are available in local qualifying in Scotland on July 9-10 — the Saturday and Sunday before the tournament. Three players will earn spots from each of the three qualifying tournaments at Ladybank, Leven Links, Lundin and Scotscraig.
