Janeen Olsen, director of marketing and communications at the festival, said the collection was quite a sight on Friday afternoon. "The lobby was just full of boxes upon boxes of food," she said. "We were pretty stunned by the sheer quantity. They did a pretty fabulous job." The costume and scene shops collected food and monetary donations and gave what they earned to the Ashland Food Bank and ACCESS, Inc. In the end, the scene shop came out on top with $1,540 worth of donations, compared to the costume shop's $1,157. The losing team was required to sing Christmas carols to the various departments at OSF. The competition, organized by the staff, was a way to give back to the community, Olsen said. While the competition was done in good spirit, there was some serious competition going on, she said. For example, the costume shop gave staff members food items like brownies and encouraged them to donate, and there were rumors of behind-the-scenes alliances to bolster reserves. Last year, the two shops collected approximately 50 boxes of food, and raised a total of $450.
