All we hear about are backups at refineries, OPEC, environmental restrictions, etc,. and that we should "get used to it." Nobody seems to be asking some obvious questions like these: Why are so-called "American" oil executives encouraging OPEC to cut production? Why no investigation at the oil companies? Why no question about possible price fixing in the oil markets? Why isn't the work "spike" being used anymore concerning gas price increases? Why no reporting of poor slob (consumer) anger? Dozens of questions should be asked but nothing is mentioned. To most of us, these price increases are almost totally unjustified, and bloated oil company profits are the elephant in the room that is being ignored. The investigations should start now and those found guilty severely punished. The breathtaking boldness of the greed that seems likely here is much more of a threat to the country than Bin Laden and his gang could ever be. Scott Darling Ashland Leuenberger a good choice for state's high court Please get out and vote this primary election (May 18). I urge you to vote for James E. Leuenberger for Oregon Supreme Court position 4 (this is a non-partisan vote). These elected positions are sometimes ignored by many and unknown by most. We the people need to take back our beautiful state. Jim Leuenberger will stand by The Oregon Constitution. He will interpret the law correctly (not create it). He believes in the people's power to initiate Constitutional change. Jim Leuenberger will see to it that there are no "Secret Courts." Please exercise your power by voting. Vote for James E. Leuenberger for Oregon Supreme Court Position 4. Remember! There is nothing cheezy (limburger) about him. Vote for Leuenberger. Debbie Conley Eagle Point 'Vocal minority' is out of touch with city plans Mr. Street's final paragraph of his guest forum (April 16) is remarkable and bears the repeating: "...if that growth [Ashland's] is to be sustainable, and protect our quality of life, it will require changes in our behavior that a 'vocal minority' like Citizens for Responsible Government has only begun to articulate." He follows with a call to "... Ashland's silent majority" to assert itself in coming elections. Swell - a coalition of Nixonian brew pub social reformers running the gamut from Saviors of Ashland, Size Matters, and Change Is Not the Only Constant are busy formulating policy to modify our behavior to suit their comfort zone. Unfortunately for Street, the Sneak Preview's second article (April 17) on the players and values guiding the planning for downtown dating back to 1988 shows Street is badly out of step with a good deal about Ashland. The Bemis project is a case in point. That vote turned on the fact that councilor Hearn recused himself from the proceedings that evening. Subsequently, the vote went 3-2 against Bemis, but anyone remotely familiar with Hearn's public stance on these issues would correctly conclude that he would have voted to uphold the Bemis project. The vote would have been 3 to 3, leaving it to Mayor DeBoer to break the tie. Any doubts about that outcome? The letter and spirit of the law, as well as the planning going back 15 years would have been upheld, leaving the reformers to consider if they represent anything more than their own reactionary interests.
