--> --> Sept. 24: SOU soccer takes down Cascade By Sarah Petersen Ashland Daily Tidings From start to finish the Southern Oregon University women's soccer team ruled the field. The Raiders (5-2, 2-2) shut out Cascade College 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the Ashland Middle School. Following a tough 4-1 loss to Western Baptist Friday, the Cascade College game took on added importance. "We needed to come back and win today," head coach Jose Chavez said. "Western Baptist wasn't any better than any other team we have played during the season. We had the same opportunities as them but we just didn't capitalize on them. "We are still trying to find our depth. We have a lot of new players who are trying to find themselves. Our depth will come. We are just as good as any other team in the conference." From the beginning the Raiders took control of the game. Within seconds of play SOU got possession of the ball and freshman midfielder Jeannelle Thompson passed to a wide open Alison Richards who knocked the ball into the back of the net to put the Raiders up 1-0. At the 10 minute mark junior forward Kristy Ayers blasted a shot from 18 yards out. The ball rebounded off Cascade goalkeeper Andrea Scherzinge's chest and rolled to senior defender Monica Doshier who nailed a shot in the back of the net for SOU's second goal of the game and the Raiders were on a roll. In the 18th minute the Raiders launched another offensive attack against the Cascade defense. After a brief scramble in the box senior midfielder Lindsey Ball managed a shot which was deflected straight to Richards who punched a shot in the net to put SOU up 3-0. After the half neither team could mount a successful offensive attack until the 80th minute when sophomore defender Deborah Bigelow passed the ball down field to a wide open Ayers who kicked the ball straight in the net, making the final score of the game 4-0. "We played with a lot more confidence today," Richards said. "You could tell that we were more determined. We also had a lot more time to warm up today. Yesterday we only had about 20 minutes." SOU was able to get 14 shots on goal while holding Cascade to five. "This was a good win for us," Doshier said. "We needed this win to help with our teams' esteem. Everything in the conference is up in the air right now and all we can do is take it one game at time. The teams energy is positive right now. I think it's cool we have three people that can score on the team instead of just one." The Raiders are slated to play at 4 p.m. Friday against Eastern Oregon at the SOU soccer field. Email your...
