OUR VIEW Our View: A place to sleep Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jul. 30, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 30, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Ashland advocates for the homeless should be watching closely as two organizations work to establish a permanent camping site to address the needs of people caught in the gap between temporary emergency shelters and subsidized housing programs. Members of the Jackson County Homeless Task Force and Rogue Retreat, a nonprofit organization that runs housing programs, are working with Medford, Central Point and Jackson County to identify potential sites for a permanent campground for about 30 tents, as well as "tiny houses" — essentially stand-alone bedrooms without electricity or water — and communal cooking and shower facilities. Ashland residents are familiar with off-and-on efforts to provide shelters where homeless people can sleep on a temporary basis, and with the obstacles that prevent more long-term solutions. One of those is the opposition of residents to siting shelters in their neighborhoods. That is likely to be the biggest hurdle facing this latest effort as well: Where will advocates find a space that won't be shot down immediately by vocal opposition from neighbors? The need is undeniable. Homeless people continually face the challenge of finding a place to sleep. Emergency shelters are only temporary, and camping illegally, in city parks, the Ashland Watershed or along the Bear Creek Greenway, is no solution either.
